Debevoise & Plimpton LLP is a leading international law firm with offices across the world. It has a substantial European practice with particular emphasis on international arbitration and litigation, cross-border acquisitions, capital markets transactions, private equity funds, financings and restructurings. The London office has more than 120 lawyers, including 29 partners and 22 international counsel. Over two thirds of our lawyers are UK-qualified. Our London lawyers work closely with their colleagues in New York, Paris and Frankfurt, as well as with lawyers in our other offices. The London office has an overall count of around 260

The department

Debevoise’s team in London represents a full range of private investment firms in all major investment strategies on a wide range of tax matters covering fund formation and economic arrangements for sponsors, downstream transactions, exits, fund restructurings, buy-side work, secondaries and wind downs. We also advise investors on their investments in private investment funds in secondary transactions, as well as in connection with fund restructurings. We are also regularly instructed to advise industrial clients on a wide range of tax matters including international tax planning, capital market transactions and financing transactions. The team in London works closely with the teams based in Frankfurt, Luxembourg and New York.

The position

The firm seeks a full time Corporate and AML Legal Assistant to become an integral member of our highly-ranked corporate team. This position offers excellent training opportunities.

Responsibilities
  • Work on matters for one of the firm's biggest clients and from time to time on matters for other clients
  • Work closely with Debevoise AML team members to prepare and respond to AML queries received from the client, their portfolio companies and third parties
  • Provide general support to Debevoise AML team members
  • Work closely with Funds, Funds Tax, M&A and Finance colleagues to develop an understanding of the client’s fund and investment structures
  • Communicate with the client on a regular basis
  • Manage entity formation processes and prepare, revise and maintain formation documents, resolutions, bylaws, organization charts and transaction documents
  • Attend internal and client calls and follow up with action points
  • Assist with uploading information to an internal database
  • Assist with billing
  • Responsibilities include both general office and billable work

Skills, experience & qualifications
  • Organised and responsive individual with an ability to prioritise and work to deadlines, demonstrating strong attention to detail
  • Previous funds experience desirable
  • Previous experience handling AML queries desirable
  • Previous paralegal experience in a legal or professional services environment 
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to communicate clearly and concisely with lawyers and other departments.
  • Be confident to work independently and manage own workload
  • Be able to work with different time zones
  • Have excellent IT skills (Excel) and knowledge of document management systems (such as iManage)
  • Team player, with a ‘can do’, positive and reliable attitude
  • Overtime will be required from time to time (this role is eligible for paid overtime) so flexibility is required
  • Self-motivated with initiative and enthusiasm
